Almost 5.8 percent of its population suffers from HIV, which is the highest in the West African bloc (World Health Organization, 2006, p. 22). Over time the adult HIV prevalence rates have gone up from 0.6 percent in 1990 to 5.1 percent as per statistics of 2010 (National AIDS Control Committee, 2010, p. 9). The adult rate indicates that the factors contributing to the difficulty must be outside the birth cycle since babies born of HIV are not included in this figure.
